Where to begin. First let me apologize for the delay in updates. It was a bit of a rough weekend. In the last update, I told you about the Children’s Christmas Event, distributing the backpacks, the flat tire and the scooter accident.
Saturday morning, Alex, Daniel and Michelle went to visit Carmen Morrissey and Pastor Andy at Calvary Chapel Community Church. Melissa stayed behind with me because of my leg injury from the scooter accident.
A little later in the morning, Melissa and I found out that Maddie was sick so we went to their apartment to check on her. At first we thought it was probably heatstroke. Friday had been very busy and very hot. Maddie was running a high fever, 102-103 and fatigued with a headache and body aches. Melissa was taking care of her while Jaydon and I looked at a few things around their apartment that needed repair. We met back up with the rest of the team when they got back from CCCC. Sunday morning while everyone was starting to get ready for church we found that Maddie had gotten worse and now Jaydon was sick as well. Not heatstroke.
As a precaution the team decided to split again. Melissa and I had already been in direct contact with Maddie so if it was something contagious, we may have been exposed, so we separated from the rest of the team and went to Maddie and Jaydon’s. Alex, Daniel and Michelle went to church and a potluck at CCCC.
while taking care of Maddie and Jaydon, Melissa was noting their symptoms. We gather the info and reached out to a friend of ours that was a retired doctor with a lot of experience in third world countries. Dr Alice suggested Dengue fever. Like malaria, you get it from mosquitoes and it is very common here.
We finally convinced them to go to the ER around 10 pm Sunday evening. Melissa went back to the apartment and I went with them to the hospital after several hours of waiting for tests and results and a fair amount of confusion about those results (long story), they were both finally admitted at around 5:30 am and I was able to come back to our apartment and rest.
Please keep Jaydon and Maddie in your prayers. Dengue is only transmitted through mosquito bites so Melissa and I are in no danger of catching it from Jaydon and Maddie.
Thank you and God bless you
Derek and Melissa

I’ve seen a lot of injuries. Even worst thsn that.
Well, by God’s Grace it ain’t broken…but it ain’t very pretty either. In any case, it could have been much, much worse. So I believe His protection is quite evident. Praying for you guys, and your sick comrades.
